Senior Cambodian Peoples Party lawmaker Cheam Yeap said July 10 that he expected the listing of the 11th-century Hindu temple, which had long been hotly disputed by Thailand, to result in a major boon for the ruling party in the July 27 general election. "I am at Prey Veng near the Vietnam border right now. We told the voters of the success of Samdech Prime Minister Hun Sen," he told the Post. Yeap said Hun Sen deserved credit for the world bodys decision because he had sent a letter to UNESCO requesting the designation six years ago. "There is no doubt that Samdech Hun Sen is a CPP leader," he boasted. Yeap said Prey Veng residents, particularly farmers, were showing their support for the CPP and were elated and proud of their premier, as was he. "I cried in front of my wife once I heard UNESCO had made a decision on the temple." Khmer-language newspapers this week featured numerous advertisements placed by CPP officials, congratulating Hun Sen, Deputy Prime Minister Sok An and CPP President Chea Sim on the world bodys decision. However, Koul Panha, director of the Committee for Free and Fair Elections, a Cambodian election monitor, questioned any exclusive claim to ownership of the temple victory and discouraged politicization of the site. "I think all political parties can use Preah Vihear as a means of attracting voters, but no one party or group should get the credit alone," he said. "I think Preah Vihear temple is the pride of all Cambodians, as well as the political parties. If only one party makes political gains off of Preah Vihear temple, I am afraid there will be an internal dispute that will lead to different attitudes about the temple." Sam Rainsy Party lawmaker Son Chhay downplayed the ruling partys hand in resolving the dispute with Thailand over ownership of the territory surrounding the temple, which for years had been the most significant obstacle to its listing. "It is the normal obligation of a government to do this. It was not the special job of the CPP," Chhay said. Cambodias tourism sector, on the other hand, is less concerned with political points. Ho Vandy, president of the Cambodian Association of Travel Agents, said on July 8 that 162 tour operators have begun promotion plans for package tours of Cambodias expanding heritage corridor. They will advertise in about 100 countries. Vandy said the proposed package includes stops at Angkor Wat, Koh Ker temple in western Preah Vihear province, Preah Vihear temple, and Wat Phu, another Khmer temple in Laos. But the immediate concern, Vandy said, should be developing Cambodias overland routes to Preah Vihear, which at present are rutted and jarring, making the temple far more accessible from the nearby Thai border. Then restaurants, hotels and shops will follow, he said. Minster of Tourism Thong Khon agreed, saying that there eventually will be four roads leading to the temple and at least one key artery will be completed by next year. "I already sent a letter to the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation to push for the road construction," he said. The first sign of things to come actually preceded UNESCOs decision; in May the newly formed Preah Vihear National Authority, or PVNA, deployed 22 heritage police. Hang Soth, director of the PVNA, a commission under the Council of Ministers, said the heritage police are charged with protecting the site from looting and vandalism. He also said that the Thai border crossing at Preah Vihear will remain closed until Thai nationalist fervor simmers down, a worry he blamed on opposition activists in Bangkok. "We respect our neighbor and the neighboring nation respects us," he said. But in Thailand, bruised nationalism remains unappeased, and the government of Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej is suffering from the fallout. On July 10, Thai Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama stepped down after the Constitutional Court ruled that he had acted illegally in signing an agreement supporting Cambodias bid to have Preah Vihear temple listed as a World Heritage Site without the permission of parliament. His move had been approved by Samaks cabinet, which the court also decided had violated the Thai Constitution in acting without parliamentary consent, a verdict that observers said could lead to a major cabinet reshuffle. In his emotional resignation speech, Noppadon maintained he had acted in good faith in signing the agreement with Cambodia. "I insist I have done nothing wrong. I have not sold the country out. Khoảng 18h30 hôm nay, các ngôi sao đội Olympic Brazil đã xuất hiện tại sảnh chờ sân bay Nội Bài, trong sự chào đón vô cùng cuồng nhiệt tới mức hỗn loạn của hơn 1.000 cổ động viên Việt Nam.

Ngay sau khi xuất hiện, các cầu thủ Brazil đi thẳng ra xe để về khách sạn Sheraton, chỉ dành cho người hâm mộ những nụ cười rất tươi và những cái vẫy tay.

Hàng chục nhân viên bảo vệ do LĐBĐVN thuê riêng đã cố gắng đi thành hai hàng để ngăn cách các cổ động viên hò hét dữ dội, tạo ra một đường dẫn các cầu thủ Brazil tới thẳng đoàn xe đón sẵn ở ngoài cửa. Đội di chuyển về khách san trong sự hộ tống của các xe cảnh sát giao thông, cảnh sát cơ động. Đa số các fan chỉ kịp giơ điện thoại để chụp hình những cầu thủ mà họ yêu mến trong vài phút. Không một cầu thủ nào dừng lại chụp ảnh kỷ niệm với người hâm mộ hay cho chữ ký, cũng như dành cho báo chí một lời phát biểu. Chỉ có Pato (Milan) tâm sự với một thành viên của VFF: “Việt Nam các bạn chào đón chúng tôi cuồng nhiệt hơn hẳn so với không khí tại sân bay bên Singapore”.

Tâm điểm của sự chú ý - Ronaldinho - xuất hiện cùng chiếc trống truyền thống của xứ samba, ban đầu tỏ vẻ ngơ ngác trước hàng nghìn người vây quanh, trước khi kịp đáp lễ bằng nụ cười tươi quen thuộc.

Mỗi cầu thủ Brazil có hai nhân viên bảo vệ đi kèm hai bên dẫn ra xe, nhưng tình trạng an ninh vẫn hỗn loạn. Nhiều người hâm mộ đã lăn xả về phía các thần tượng, xô ngã cả vệ sĩ và khiến các cầu thủ hoảng hốt. Có một fan may mắn sờ được vào tóc Ronaldinho thì bị mất điện thoại. Anh phát biểu: “Cầu thủ tôi chờ đón hôm nay là Anderson, nhưng chạm được vào Ronaldinho cũng tốt rồi, dù bị mất điện thoại”. Trong cảnh xô đẩy, nhiều phóng viên cũng bị móc mất điện thoại khi mải chụp ảnh và tiếp cận cầu thủ.

Từ khoảng 16h (trước khi chuyến bay chở đội Brazil hạ cánh hơn hai tiếng), sảnh chờ của sân bay Nội Bài đã có khoảng 500 cổ động viên hò hét ầm vang, đa số là fan của MU đợi sự xuất hiện của Anderson. Đến tầm 18h, số cổ động viên lên tới 1.000, trong đó đông nhất vẫn là của MU (chừng hơn 300), ngoài ra là fan của Milan, Barca và người hâm mộ chung của đội Brazil.

Họ mang cờ, trang phục của MU, Milan, Barca và đội tuyển Brazil, cùng rất nhiều băng rôn để chào đón các ngôi sao (với các khẩu hiệu như Brazil là số một, Tôi yêu Brazil, Yêu MU và Anderson…). Đón đội Brazil tại sân bay còn có một số quan chức VFF, đại diện sứ quán Brazil, hàng chục phóng viên trong nước và quốc tế (AP, Reuters, ESPN….).

Tại khách sạn Sheraton, công tác an ninh được triển khai trước khi Olympic Brazil đến sớm cả tiếng đồng hồ. Cảnh sát cơ động chốt ở hai cửa ra vào. Cuộc đón tiếp các ngôi sao Nam Mỹ vì vậy diễn ra không ồn ào.

HLV Dunga là một trong những người xuống xe đầu tiên. Tiếp sau là các quan chức và cầu thủ. Ronaldinho ngồi ở phía dưới nên là người xuống xe gần cuối cùng. Đón tiếp Brazil tại sảnh khách sạn Sheraton có Tổng thư ký VFF Trần Quốc Tuấn và Phó tổng Dương Nghiệp Khôi. Trong trang phục quần ngố, áo phông xanh giản dị, HLV trưởng đội tuyển Việt Nam Calisto cũng có mặt tại sảnh lúc đó. Ông ôm vai Anderson, trò chuyện khá thân tình với một số ngôi sao áo vàng xanh. Toàn bộ ban lãnh đạo và cầu thủ của Olympic Brazil không phải làm thủ tục đăng ký phòng, họ được đưa đến phòng ăn lớn ngay cạnh sảnh khách sạn.

32 thành viên đội Brazil sẽ trú tại toàn bộ tầng 10 khách sạn Sheraton và nhất cử nhất động của họ đều được chăm sóc, bảo vệ. Trong suốt thời gian tại Hà Nội, công tác bảo đảm an ninh, an toàn cho Brazil sẽ do một đại đội cảnh sát đặc nhiệm Hà Nội chuyên trách.

Thầy trò HLV Carlos Dunga sẽ có hai buổi tập tại Mỹ Đình vào buổi chiều ngày 30 và 31/7. Chưa biết HLV Dunga có chấp nhận tập mở cho cổ động viên theo dõi hay không, nhưng đại diện của họ cũng để ngỏ khả năng cho VFF khai thác buổi tập mở (nếu đội Brazil đồng ý). VFF đã chính thức gửi lời đề nghị bán vé theo dõi buổi tập của Brazil. Theo đó, sẽ có 15.000 vé được bán ra với các mệnh giá từ 30.000 đến 50.000 đồng.

Trận giao hữu giữa tuyển Việt Nam và Olympic Brazil diễn ra vào 20h ngày 1/8, trên sân Mỹ Đình.

Ngoài khoản phí ra sân và di chuyển (300.000 euro), phía Liên đoàn bóng đá Việt Nam còn phải đáp ứng các điều kiện khác mà đội Brazil yêu cầu: ăn ở tại khách sạn năm sao (Sheraton), 3 chiếc xe ôtô: một xe bus 50 chỗ chở cầu thủ, một xe mini bus chở đội ngũ nhân viên kỹ thuật và một xe limousine. Tổng số tiền mà VFF phải chi cho thương vụ cỡ bự này đã được dự trù với con số khoảng 9,5 tỷ đồng.

VFF hy vọng có thể thu về chừng 13 tỷ đồng từ trận đấu giao hữu sắp tới (đã bán hết vé với các mức từ 200.000 đến 700.000 đồng; và tiền quảng cáo). Chủ tịch VFF Nguyễn Trọng Hỷ từng nhấn mạnh rằng chỉ cần bán được 80% số vé (sân Mỹ Đình có sức chứa hơn 40.000), Liên đoàn hoà vốn. Bên cạnh đó, VFF sẽ bán vé vào sân Mỹ Đình xem buổi tập của Brazil (nếu được đội bạn chấp nhận).

Sau khi đá trận giao hữu, thầy trò Carlos Dunga sẽ bay thẳng tới Bắc Kinh dự Olympic.
